"Sadie"
Sadie is a four year-old intact female coonhound that decided to go for a wild "ride". In October of 2007, Sadie was riding in the back of a pick-up and fell out while her owners were driving down the road. When she fell down onto the road, the truck tire pulled her underneath the vehicle and her left side was run-over. Upon presentation, she had several lacerations extending into her stifle and hock joints. Much of the skin on her tarsus was missing or necrotic. At that point, her other limbs were weight bearing, although her left elbow was swollen and painful to the touch.
Radiographs were obtained and it was determined that, miraculously, no bones were broken. Sadie was givin pain medication, pre-surgical antibiotics and was prepped for surgery.
Surgery lasted an hour and a half. Decaying skin and tissue were debrided and even a pea-sized stone was removed from under the remaining tissue left on her toes. Three drains were placed and a sterile bandage and splint were applied. Antibiotics, analgesics, and anti-inflammatory therapy were instituted.
Over the course of the next 4 weeks, Sadie returned for twice weekly bandage changes and rechecks. Her mobility slowly returned and her wounds continued to heal.
Today, Sadie is doing wonderfully and is back out in the woods coonhunting! Her first litter of pups are expected to come later this summer and since October, she now has her own very special spot in the front seat!
