Complete Physical Examination

The gradual onset of health problems in an apparently healthy pet often goes unnoticed. Once symptoms appear, the condition may be more difficult or costly to diagnose and treat. Although age itself is not a disease, it can accelerate many conditions that if diagnosed early, may be completely reversed or managed for extended periods of time.

At least twice a year, your pet should have a complete physical examination which will evaluate his or her eyes, ears, cardiopulmonary system, locomotion, oral cavity, skin, urogenital system, abdomen, gastrointestinal tract and any concerns or questions that you may have on his or her general health or behavior. Remember, your pet's lifespan is shorter than a person's and much can happen in 6 months.

Vaccination Against Preventable Diseases

Due to the many recent discoveries and innovations in veterinary medicine, your pet can be protected from many major infectious diseases. Today, many immunizations and preventive treatments are available that did not exist just a few years ago. The staff at Cedar County Veterinary Services can help you decide what preventative measures are necessary for your pet(s).

Heartworm Testing / Prevention

A potentially fatal disease, we can test your pet for heartworms and provide him (or her) with an appropriate preventative medication.

Tick-borne Disease Testing

We have an in-house laboratory test for diagnosing Lyme Disease and Ehrlichiosis, plus several other diseases that ticks can transmit to your pet.

Fecal Examinations for Intestinal Parasites

Fecal examinations are important to diagnose the many different types of parasites that can infect pets. Several of these are zoonotic, which means that they can also infect people. Therefore, appropriate evaluation and therapy is important not only for your pet, but also for you!

Feline Leukemia / Feline Immunodeficiency Virus Testing

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) are two major causes of illness and death in domestic and feral cats. Cedar County Veterinary Services is equipped with in-house feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) testing. These tests are invaluable as they give accurate, immediate results for both screening and diagnostic purposes.

Surgery

Our hospital is equipped to perform most surgical procedures - from spays and neuters to more complicated procedures. We take pride in our anesthesia equipment, our patient care and utilization of new and advanced surgical techniques.

Dental Care

Animals (like people), need regular dental care. Gum disease causes pain, accounts for the loss of teeth, and can lead to serious generalized bacterial infections. Our physical exams include a thorough examination of the mouth. We stress prevention by proper oral hygeine and maintenance. Once gingivitis and tarter are present, teeth cleaning (removal of dental plaque and tartar), is done under general anesthesia and home care is then instituted.

Radiology

We have a state-of-the-art X-ray machine that produces excellent quality radiographs (X-rays). Radiographs are essential for diagnosing certain medical and/or surgical problems and are performed routinely with pets either awake or anesthetized. We also are able to perform various types of contrast studies as well as X-rays for the diagnosis of hip dysplasia.

On-site Blood Chemistry Analyzer

Laboratory testing plays an integral role in the early detection of changes in your pet's health. Diagnostic tests provide essential information by which our veterinarians can identify blood disorders, kidney and liver disease, diabetes, infection, cancer, thyroid disease and other hormonal problems.

Our extensive laboratory provides fast and accurate information that is necessary for the well being of your pet. Owing to our modern in-house diagnostic equipment, animals can receive appropriate treatment immediately after arriving at the hospital.

Microchipping - Permanent Identification

A microchip is a tiny electronic device, about the size and shape of a grain of rice. It is implanted beneath a pet's skin between the shoulder blades, and stays there for the pet's entire life. This procedure is as easy and as painless as a vaccination.

Each microchip has a unique number. This number, along with information about the owner and pet, are added to a national pet registry. Most veterinarians and animal shelters have electronic scanners for detecting and reading these implanted microchips. If a lost pet is found, and the microchip is scanned, the registry is called and the owner is contacted.

Specialty Diets

We stock a very wide range of prescription and specialty pet diets. Over many years, our doctors have developed great confidence in these diets as an adjunct to the treatment of a variety of diseases including those affecting the kidneys, heart and liver. Additionally, there are diets to promote healthy weight management, allergy maintenance, and aid pets with sensitive stomachs.

Pharmacy Including Specialty Compounded and Flavored Medications

We carry a large inventory of veterinary pharmaceutical items, supplies, and medications, and are now able to offer many custom compounded pharmaceuticals such as flavored liquids and transdermal preparations. These special preparations are particularly useful for pets who are difficult to medicate.
